Often when holiday season approaches- “the season of giving”- people get relaxed about their home security. Don’t do it- ‘cause burglars are very busy this time of year. The season of hospitality and at-home entertaining should not extend to whose who want to abscond with your possessions.
Since most burglaries are committed the “old-fashioned way” – by just entering an unlocked door or window– don’t forget the obvious. Lock all your doors and windows all the time- day and night! If you never installed locks on your windows, or do not have deadbolts on your doors- call your local locksmith! It’s a very affordable upgrade.
Double deadbolts are fabulous – the kind that require a key to exit as well as a key to enter- are the very best. However, in an emergency situation, make sure you keep a hidden key close by so you can get out quickly.
My favorite higher-priced upgrade is a security gate at the street around the perimeter of your property. Given a choice of with or without, a burglar is less likely to target your home if it is gated. And if your perimeter is not too large, it may cost less than $3000 for a basic 6-foot wrought iron fence. When installed properly, a fence could also add beauty and value to your property.
Alarms systems are very effective, and so are surveillance cameras. The great thing about surveillance cameras is that only YOU know if they are recording anything or not. So whether they are operating or dummy, any camera installed on your property is a fabulous deterrent.
Another of my favorite choices for home security is to plant spiky cactus plants, century plants, or thorny bushes heavily below windows and around doors. Loose gravel or stones that are noisy or make footing difficult are also not endearing to burglars, and can be installed in a very artful, decorative manner.
So review your checklist, make sure you have the right protection- and that you’re using it.
